Welcome to Nagaland

~~++~~++~~++~~++

As dusk settles in and around Kohima, the capital town of Nagaland.

So much is unknown about Nagaland, that generally, visitors to India are not even aware of its existence. Personally I don't blame them - there are some Indians who don't know where Nagaland is either. The remote location of the state is another contributing factor. There are not many travellers to this region since the north-east region of India is regarded by many as inhabited by "savage" people. The terrain is savage - I can you tell that much. But, the people are generally warm-hearted. To make matters more complicated, there is a long-standing problem between the Indian government and rebels in the state. A special permit, in addition to the regular passports and visas, is necessary to enter this border state. Needless to say, this thwarts tourism in Nagaland.
  • But now, things are opening up. Nagaland is by and large, at peace within and negotiations are on with the Central government for a permanent peaceful solution. Nagaland and the Nagas, are slowly opening up for the world to see...

The State of Nagaland, lying in the extreme part of North-east India, has a thickly-wooded mountainous terrain with clear streams cutting a path through its numerous valleys.
Nagaland is populated by barely 2 million people. A single city in India usually has more than 1 million ! Visitors to Nagaland are few and far-between. But rest assured - those who have seen its breath-taking scenery, the exotic flora and fauna, the "laid-back" environment and experienced the inherent hospitality of the Naga people, are already planning to visit again.
A TRIBAL SOCIETY...
The Nagas are a tribal society. Nagaland is inhabited by 16 major tribes and other sub-tribes. Each tribe has its own language, culture, dresses and practices. These fiercely-independent tribals try to live in peace and harmony with one another.
