Nagaland was formally inaugurated on December 1st, 1963, as the 16th State of the Indian Union. It is a member-state of the Seven Sisters of North-east India. It is bounded by Assam in the West, Myanmar (Burma) on the East , Arunachal Pradesh and part of Assam in the North and Manipur in the South.
Nagaland is divided into eight administrative districts. Each district is headed by a Deputy Commissioner (D.C) and assisted by his subordinates. The State of Nagaland holds a special status in the Indian constitution. It is governed both by laws made by the Indian Parliament as well as its unique customary laws. In fact, an article in the Indian constitution clearly states that no laws passed by the Indian Parliament is applicable to Nagaland, if it interferes with the customary laws of the people. Customary laws usually involve harsh fines and public humiliation.
Kohima is the capital of Nagaland. The town of Dimapur situated close to the border with Assam, is the commercial capital.
