Chumukidema is the district headquarters of Dimapur. It lies on the National Highway No.39, about 14 kilometers south-east of Dimapur en-route to Kohima. Before the State of Nagaland was formed, Chumukidema was the first headquarters of the then Naga Hills District of Assam (Nagaland was once a part of the State of nearby Assam). Until recently, both Chumukidema and Dimapur were areas under Kohima district.

Dimapur is also known as the"Gateway to Nagaland". It is the commercial capital of the State. Rail, land and air routes connect Dimapur to the rest of India. Dimapur also has the only airport in Nagaland with the Indian Airlines offering regular services to and from Kolkata.

The ruins of the Ancient Kachari kingdom still stands at Dimapur.

The sprawling town of Dimapur was once the capital of the ancient Kacharis. Megalithic culture, characterised by huge stones, existed in this region. Most of the ruins show that they belonged to the Kachari Civilization which existed in these parts before the 13th Century A.D. Archaeological evidence shows that elaborate rituals on fertility were performed during those days.

Intangki Wildlife Sanctuary

The Intangki Wildlife Sanctuary is located at about 37 kilometers south-west of Dimapur. It plays host to a number of wildlife including some rare species of birds. The Forest Wildlife Department is doing a fine job in preserving these birds and animals.

Fact Files

- Chumukidema is also known by another name - "neeche-guard" (translating to "lower-guard"). The reason was that, it is situated at the base of the Naga Hills. A garrison of soldiers was headquartered in this area during World War II. The name stuck, probably due to the difficult pronounciation of its actual name. The British built huge storage depots in and around Dimapur town. The ruins of some of these stone and mortar depots are still standing in Dimapur, especially around P.W.D. colony.
