Green
Park - a place to cool off at Dimapur.
|
Dimapur
is situated at an altitude of 195 meters above sea-level. It
is one of the few places in Nagaland where the climate
is hot and humid. The climate in the rest of Nagaland ranges from
cool to cold. In fact, the drop in temperature is quite noticeable
after about 20 kms. drive from Dimapur towards Kohima. You will
practically feel the chill in the air, especially during winter... Welcome
to Nagaland !!!

The ruins of the Ancient Kachari kingdom still stands at Dimapur. |
|
The sprawling town of Dimapur was
once the capital of the ancient Kacharis. Megalithic culture, characterised
by huge stones, existed in this region. Most of the ruins show
that they belonged to the Kachari Civilization which existed in
these parts before the 13th Century A.D. Archaeological evidence
shows that elaborate rituals on fertility were performed during
those days.

- Chumukidema is
also known by another name - "neeche-guard" (translating
to "lower-guard"). The reason was that, it is situated
at the base of the Naga Hills. A garrison of soldiers was headquartered
in this area during World War II. The name stuck,
probably due to the difficult pronounciation of its actual name.
The British built huge storage depots in and around Dimapur town.
The ruins of some of these stone and mortar depots are still
standing in Dimapur, especially around P.W.D. colony.
